For this reason [seeing the greatness of this plan by which you are built together in Christ], I bow my knees before the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 For Whom every family in heaven and on earth is named [that Father from Whom all fatherhood takes its title and derives its name].
Ephesians 3:14-15 AMPC
What posture should I take when I pray? Do I need to bow? Sit? Kneel? Stand? Have you ever wondered this?
Here Paul mentions that he bows his knees to the Father. Does that mean we always need to bow? Not necessarily. He didn’t mention bowing at all in the previous prayers we have already seen.
There is no formula. The Bible mentions all kinds of different postures people have taken but there isn’t one specific formula we need to follow. God hears you whether you’re sitting or kneeling, lying down or standing up, or anything in between. It’s more about the posture of your heart than the posture of your body.
Paul didn’t just bow to bow. Bowing has a purpose. It is an act of honor. It shows humility and complete submission to the One before whom you are bowing, which in this case is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As he began his prayer, Paul focused on the Fatherhood of God. We weren’t just removed as slaves in one kingdom so we could be slaves in a better kingdom. We are no longer slaves at all. We are sons. We are daughters. We are children of God. And as Paul began his prayer for the church, he lingered in that thought for a while.
Say this out loud. “God is my Father. I am His child. I am a child of God.” It takes the light of the Holy Spirit to fully understand it, so that’s what we’re going to pray today.
Let’s pray together.
Father, we ask You to reveal Your Fatherhood to Your Church in the city of Warren. Help them understand the depth of that truth. Bring them into a sense of acceptance like they’ve never felt before. We pray they will fully realize the fact that they belong to a family. Your family. And let that thought bring them peace and a sense of safety all day long. In Jesus’ Name, amen!
